VPS Hosting Myth Busters

People often associate the acronym “VPS” with DDoS, DMCA, or the National Security Agency for some strange reason. This shouldn’t be the case, however. You don’t have to worry about a nasty VPS monster eating your website.

VPSs are a great solution for those who need more than shared hosting can provide, but do not need to pay for a more expensive dedicated server. To better understand the benefits of VPS, let’s look at several myths:

Myth #1: VPS Hosting is only for Linux experts!

It was probably true some 15+ years ago when VPS hosting were relatively new. Virtualization software was still in BETA and managed hosts weren’t yet available.

At the time, the most widely accepted advice for “VPS” was:

You should avoid VPS if you are not an expert! Nevertheless, this isn’t true anymore since we’re in 2022! There are two main options available to buyers, including managed VPS hosting and unmanaged (self-managed) VPS hosting.

Quality management can be easily and affordably found by non-experts. A managed virtual private server host takes care of security, updates, backups, and performance for you. You don’t have to worry about server management because we do it for you.

Myth #2: Unmanaged VPS is cheaper!

In other words, this is the opposite myth of “experts only”.

There is nothing wrong with not knowing everything, but you cannot know anything either. A lack of knowledge can’t be filled by following random posts on a blog or forum.

An unmanaged VPS hosting has many hidden costs. Servers that are not managed are blank, having no software installed – often not even the operating system! Neither a panel nor any security software, firewall nor DNS. In spite of the fact that the internet offers tutorials on almost anything, learning is not the same as knowing.

What do you do if your VPS kernel panics at 3 AM? Do you frantically pound the keyboard with blurry eyes, praying that a Google search will provide the answer? Do you prefer to submit a support ticket to your host or server manager, then go back to sleep?

When it comes to time and licensing, unmanaged can be more expensive.

Myth #3: Migrating to VPS is difficult!

It is both a fact and a myth at the same time.

Migration is easy if you’re using a panel like Plesk or cPanel! There is indeed no easy way to move from a shared cPanel server to a free control panel. There’s yet another reason why unmanaged isn’t fun.

Go4Hosting spawns all VPSs ordered with Plesk or cPanel before they are offered to customers. It takes about two minutes to do that. We then tweak it for performance and harden it for security. Our final step involves moving all your sites from a shared server to a VPS. With a VPS, you get the same level of power and customization as your shared hosting account. The migration process can be completed in just a few hours with a managed VPS hosting service.

Overview of VPS Hosting and its Pros

The term VPS is an acronym for Virtual Private Server. This type of hosting is designed to bridge the gap between shared hosting and dedicated hosting. The server accessed by you and hundreds of other users is called a shared hosting environment. The cost of shared plans is low due to a large number of people using the same machine. However, there are some drawbacks.

The same resources are used by all of you simultaneously. An influx of traffic on one website can affect the performance of all sites hosted on the shared server. While the popularity of your project grows, it is not a viable solution if you want a consistent loading speed. In comparison to shared hosting, a dedicated server is a far more powerful alternative. As a result, your server’s hardware resources are reserved exclusively for you all the time. It is extremely expensive to set up and maintain an entire physical server due to the astronomical costs involved.

A VPS hosting account sits somewhere in between a shared hosting account and a dedicated hosting account. Once again, multiple accounts reside on the same physical server. There is, however, a virtual machine for each account this time.

A virtual machine provides an isolated environment for users. Their hardware resources aren’t quite as powerful as dedicated servers, but they’re always available to you, and you can choose your own dedicated IP address.

Due to its many advantages, VPS hosting is growing rapidly in popularity. Here are some of its benefits:

Cost-Effective Solution:

For websites that outgrew their shared accounts, there was no other option but to switch to expensive dedicated servers until VPS hosting was introduced. The price of VPS plans is higher than the price of shared ones because they are more powerful. In contrast to dedicated hosting, multiple VPSs can co-exist on the same physical server, making them much cheaper.

Performance Reliability:

The VPS provides reliable performance because its hardware resources are always available to you. Your website won’t be slowed down by others taking up too much power.

Scalability at Ease:

Hosting providers can easily reconfigure your virtual server, so you can upgrade without much downtime. You can even upgrade individual components with some hosts.

Guaranteed Email Deliverability:

Email deliverability is guaranteed because shared servers share the same hardware resources as well as the same IP address. In the event that one of the shared server accounts starts sending spam, the IP address can be quickly blacklisted, resulting in the loss of valuable email correspondence. VPSs come with their own IP address. Using it and maintaining its reputation is entirely your responsibility.

Usage Ease:

A virtual server may seem complicated to many people, but it has the advantage of being easy to use. It’s always possible to get a managed VPS solution if you aren’t confident enough to manage all the configuration and maintenance yourself. The host will handle all the complicated technical tasks, and you will be able to manage your projects through the control panel.

Wrap-Up: What is the best way to manage? –  What do you think?

Most myths about VPS are actually the result of management mistakes.

The only difficulty arises when non-experts use unmanaged VPS hosting. On the flip side, managed hosts are no problem for non-technical customers or those who are new to hosting. The key is simply choosing the right products.

At Go4Hosting, we have been a pioneer in offering managed services. Unlike our customers, most of us do not specialize in IT but rather specialize in a particular field. The sites and servers are handled by us, so they can concentrate on important matters. For sites that have outgrown shared hosting but don’t require a beefy dedicated solution, VPS is an excellent choice.

You should not let the myths deter you from making an informed decision about your hosting.
